Mato Kuroi meets a girl named Yomi Takanashi, on her first day of middle school. Both girls are complete opposites in personalities but they become good friends and spend each day together. Mato gives Yomi a blue star shape phone charm that’s identical to hers as a sign of their friendship. When the two girls enter their second year, they are now in different classes, and their friendship starts drifting apart. Mato starts hanging out with Yuu Koutari, who she met through the basketball team. Yomi becomes jealous of Mato’s friendship with Yuu. Mato and Yomi drifted apart so much that Mato can’t find Yomi anywhere, it’s as if she had disappeared. Mato then searches for Yomi, but is taken to a strange world where she meets a young girl with a blue flame residing in her eye, Black Rock Shooter. Black★Rock Shooter then merges with Mato and helps her search for her friend Yomi, who is possessed by the other young girl who is holding a jet-black sythe, Dead Master.

On the first day of middle school, Mato Kuroi runs into Yomi Takanashi, who seems to be a shy girl. Mato tries to talk to Yomi but she avoids her at first, until she notices a blue star like charm on Mato’s cell phone, discovering they share a common interest. From then on they both form a strong friendship together. Both of the girls are keeping a secret from one another, in the alternate universe, both girls exist as parallel beings. Each of them don’t know each other’s identities in this world, in which Mato is actually Black Rock Shooter and Yomi is actually the Dead Master. What happens in one world has their own effect in the other world, both girls are unaware about this fact.
